Dig Down Deep
"As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built."
— Luke 6:47-48
Gracious Lord Jesus, my friend and my King,
The person who comes to you, hears your words and puts them into practice is someone who is living deeper than a surface-level faith. This person is one who is willing to do the challenging work of digging down deep. Deeply digging into their own soul to remove layers of sediment and stoney ground in order to lay a foundation of your Word.
Excavating one's heart can be grueling. It's easier to just build on the surface. Throw up a hastily built stick frame house and move on in. It's got four walls and a roof and it looks as good as anyone else's house. But when the raging waters of life rush in, as they surely will, that house is going to fall. Only the house built on a sure foundation that has been constructed deep in the earth of one's heart will withstand the floods of life.
Lord Jesus, what do you want to dig out of my heart today and replace with your Word? What sediment and stone has accumulated over the years that needs to be dug out and replaced with pilings that penetrate the bedrock? When the lateral forces of wind and water create an increased vertical load onto my foundation, will my house still stand? Am I sufficiently anchored into the immovable Rock that is Christ so that when seismic events start to shake my life, my foundation in You is able to absorb those forces?
Gracious Lord Jesus, today I ask You to dig into my heart to excavate the sand of my soul that has collected over the years. Pour into me the foundation of Your Word and may I be formed and anchored into You. When the winds blow, the floodwaters rise, and the earth begins to quake, I won't be shaken because my foundation is deeply embedded in You.
— In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen!
