I Am
But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
— Mark 14:61-62
Gracious Lord Jesus, my friend and my King,
There are times when, like the high priest, I accuse you and demand answers. Usually it's when I think I deserve an answer, when my perception is that you aren't meeting my demands, and when, like a petulant child, I'm dissatisfied with how you are leading my life. In those moments, you often remain silent and give me no answer.
The high priest pressed you further asking, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" Your answer was simply, "I am." That made me stop cold today. When I am demanding answers and asking repeated questions, you break your silence by saying definitively and simply, "I AM." "Before you were, I AM." "In the midst of all your questions, I AM." "In response to your childish demands, I AM." As if to say unequivocally, "'I AM' is enough... I AM enough."
And then you give the high priest some new information, "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." In the midst of my unanswered questions and my unmet demands, you say, "I AM" and "I am going to be seated at the right hand of Almighty God and I am coming back soon." My questions and demands feel very small and very thin in light of this jaw-dropping reality. It makes me retract what you have let be unanswered and I am willing to rest in the powerful reality of who you are and what is to come.
Gracious Lord, today I surrender my questions and I retract my demands. I rest in Your silence and in Your power and might. I long for Your returning and until that day, Your "I AM" is more than sufficient to me!
— In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen!
