Distressed
"and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment."
— 2 Peter 2:7-9
Gracious Lord Jesus, my friend and my King,
Genesis 19 recounts the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities in the plains of the Jordan. Genesis 13:13 says, "Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord." Ezekiel 16:49-50 describes this city's sin. They were "arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before Me." Lot chose to live and remain in this wicked city and even become a civic leader ("seated at the gateway of the city," Genesis 19:1). But Lot was distressed by the depraved conduct all around him. In fact, he was tormented in his soul by all the sinful deeds he saw and heard. David Guzik writes, "Lot's soul was tormented, but he failed to follow through with godly actions and separate himself and his family from the ungodliness of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord delivered Lot because of his righteous soul; yet Lot lost everything else because of his too-close association with those wicked cities."
Lord, two questions come to my mind: 1) Am I distressed by the depraved conduct going on in our world day after day, or have I grown accustomed to it, redefined it, even accepted it as normal or even good? 2) How does one live in this depraved world yet be separated from it (2 Cor. 6:17)? How do I keep from becoming like the world while I live within the world?
Lord Jesus, today may my soul be moved and even distressed by the sin and depravity of this world. Help me to not be lulled to sleep or grow so accustomed to the sin around me that I am unaffected by it. Nor keep me from completely disassociating from a world that needs to see righteous living, love, and truth.
— In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen!
