Treasure

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

— Matthew 6:19-21

Gracious Lord Jesus, my friend and my King,

Wow, how easy it is to lose sight of this reality. I'm working on a project right now that requires storing up in preparation for the future. But as I do so, I forget that the real future I'm storing up for is the eternal future. It's not unwise to prepare for the unexpected or to save for the future. Proverbs 6:6-8 highlights how the ant stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. But storing up provisions and storing up treasures are probably two different things. When my preparation becomes my treasure, then I know I'm off course.

In my desire to accumulate—whatever it is: savings and investments, backpacking gear, running shoes, books, or bird feeders—when those desires and that accumulation eclipses my desire for You, I suspect that's when the moths, vermin, and thieves get sent it. Lord, you do a great job of keeping me on course. And you'll use break-ins and destruction to do it, if necessary!

Today, Lord, may my heart be focused on the right things and may my treasure be in Heaven. May my desire to possess and accumulate be satisfied in possessing more of You as You possess more of me. May what I accumulate be more of Your wisdom and discernment and the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit. May what I store up today be lasting and eternal, something that can't ever be destroyed or stolen!

In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen!

  1. A gentle reminder and word of truth. Lord help me keep my gaze on you and eternal life. Earthly possessions will rot.

I ask the Lord today to not let me be satisfied on possessions but on the spirit. Spirit of the Living God I ask you to redirect me when I go off the path letting my earthly desires come before you.

Let me be satisfied in you alone Father and keep my eyes and my heart on eternal life with you not the temporary things of this world.
