Eternal Gospel
“Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
— Revelation 14:6-7
Gracious Lord Jesus, my friend and my King,
It’s a fitting passage for Christmas, isn't it? An angel flying around the globe proclaiming the eternal gospel to everyone on earth below. His words, “Fear God and give Him glory” are reminiscent of the words announced on the night of Your arrival to earth: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests” (Luke 2:14).
This time, however, the angel’s words are followed by a pronouncement of judgment rather than peace. “The hour of his judgment has come.” The Creator of the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water, who came to bring peace to mankind, now brings their final judgment. The time is growing short. The eternal gospel is shouted from above to every nation, tribe, language and people. This is the gospel, the good news, announced on Christmas morning. This is the good news that in this hour has been rejected by many but is still being offered to those whose eternity hangs in the balance. While I shudder to think of that day to come, I rejoice that the eternal gospel is still available. “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11).
Lord Jesus, thank You for the eternal gospel that has brought me great joy. I pray today as Your gospel goes forth around this globe much like the angel of Revelation 14, that hearts would turn to You, turn from self-centered ways, and fear God and give Him glory!
— In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen!
